Meditation on Light for personal use

Prepare for meditation by using the flame of a candle or lamp, on your altar or on a table, some five or six feet away from you.

First of all, make your body comfortable; suitable posture, back as straight as possible, so you may sit for some minutes without discomfort and distraction; when you are seated and ready, then allow your eyes to close gently.
(Pause …)

Now place all your attention on your breath - which should be deep and even. Feel the touch of your breath at the nostrils, as you breathe in and breathe out - and feel your body relaxing with each breath.

With each outward breath, feel all the tensions leaving your body - and feel yourself going deeper and deeper into relaxation.
(Pause …)

With each inward breath, breathe in peace and joy, and feel your mind becoming calm and tranquil.
(Pause …)

Now open your eyes and start gazing steadily at the flame, without blinking. Note the size and shape, the different colours of the flame, and the aura surrounding it.
(Pause …)

Close your eyes and visualise the flame between the eyebrows. From there, let it slide down into your heart, lighting up the path. Visualise the heart as a lotus bud - and as the light enters the heart, see the petals of the lotus open one by one, cleansing all your thoughts, feelings and emotions, and filling your heart with soothing, healing, light and love.
(Pause …)

This light becomes brighter and brighter and expands to fill the whole of your chest, then spreads to both shoulders, arms and hands, bathing them in the light, cleansing them and helping them to become instruments of service to your fellow human beings.
(Pause …)

'Now see the light spreading into your abdomen, healing every organ it touches, then spreading into both hips, and down both legs and feet, filling them with light. From now on your feet will only tread the path of right conduct, righteousness and lead you toward the light.
(Pause …)

Let the light reach upwards toward your throat, tongue and mouth, and purify these instruments of speech. From now on, these will speak only truthful, kind and loving words.
(Pause …)

Let the light reach your eyes and ears, and sanctify your vision and hearing - so that you will perceive the beauty and the oneness of all of God's creation.
(Pause …)

Lastly, take the light to your head illuminating and cleansing your mind and intellect.
(Pause …)

'The light then moves outside your head, and forms a corona, enshrining and covering your head - then moves outside your body, forming a cocoon of light, encasing it, healing and energising it. See the light in you and around you, become more and more intense, until you feel you have become a being of light.
(Pause …)

Let the light expand beyond your person to encompass those near you, your friends, spouse, children, parents, those whom you work with, those whom you recreate with. As the light expands, see your beloved family, companions and friends become filled with the light.
(Pause …)

Allow the light to expand further, and fill your neighbourhood, filling the homes, trees, animals, parks, gardens. Send the light out further to encompass your entire country. Expand the light to the centre of the earth, then let it expand further to fill the oceans, continents, islands, polar caps. Send the light further out into the day sky, the night sky, and let it fill the entire universe.
(Pause …)

Say to yourself, "I am in the light,
the light is in me,
the light and I are one".
(Pause …)

Stay in this thrill of witnessing light encompassing, filling all that is.
(Pause …)

Gently return from the light, allowing the universe to reappear in your mind's eye; see the light return to the earth, to your country, to the room you are sitting in see the flame of light in your heart; abjure it to remain burning within you all day.
(Pause …)

Become aware of your body, your limbs, your posture
Slowly flex your limbs, and rise from your meditation when you are ready.
